How to get licensed in the state of North Carolina as a physician

The North Carolina Medical Board requires physicians to apply for licensure online using an NCMB Licensure Gateway account. After paying the application fee, applicants have one year to submit all documentation.

Licensing Fees (Nonrefundable):

  • License Fee: $400
  • Finger Print: $48
  • NPDB HIPDB: $2.50
  • North Carolina Accepts FCVS
  • 3 attempts per USMLE Step or COMLEX Level
  • No time limit for passing all 3 steps
  • 1-year minimum post-graduate training required
  • For IMG: 2 years minimum post-graduate training
  • FCVS is required for physicians with an established FCVS Profile and IMGs

North Carolina requires physicians to complete at least 60 hours of Category 1 CME credits per triennial licensure cycle. The licensure period begins on the physician’s birthday following license issuance. First-time license renewals are exempt from CME requirements. Physicians must complete 3 CME credit hours each renewal cycle on controlled substances.
